History of Peanuts in Indonesia


According to history, peanuts are not indigenous plants of indonesia. To be precise, peanuts have been cultivated by Indonesian farmers since 480 years ago. There are 4 stages of entry of peanut in Indonesia:
  • In the year 1521 - 1529, peanuts have entered in Indonesia through Spanish traders that have come from Mexico to Maluku, Indonesia. The peanuts are from Brasilia (South America)
  • In the year 1579 - 1610, peanuts have entered in Indonesia through Spanish traders that have sailed into Maluku, Indonesia.
    The peanuts were long-life type (8-10 months) so that the spread was slow.
  •  In 1863, Holle brought peanuts from England to Indonesia. The peanuts were upright, different from the previous peanuts. 
  • In 1864, Scheffer brought peanuts from Egypt to Indonesia. The peanuts were upright.
In the long period of time there has been a natural crosses between peanuts from abroad and peanuts cultivated by farmers.
